Ripley
Entertainment offers 50-plus family attractions
in 13 states (July
2, 2008) More than 50 percent of the U.S.
population lives within a half tank of
gas of one of the 50-plus Ripley Entertainment
attractions located in the U.S. and Niagara
Falls, Can. Based on auto industry averages,
53 percent of the U.S. population can visit
a Ripley family attraction and get home
on one tank of gas or less.
“Ripley attractions have always been convenient, value oriented, unique,
and full of family fun,” said Ripley Entertainment president Jim Pattison
Jr. “With the price of gas and the rising
costs of all travel, our attractions are well-suited
for day travelers from coast to coast.”
Operating 11 different
brands of family attractions in 13 states
(Niagara Falls, Canada), gives Ripley Entertainment
the advantage of great diversification – both
operationally and geographically - which gives it relative stability in the current
economic climate. That variety, notes Pattison, “has
helped buck the national trend so far this
summer in many of our drive-to markets.”
Pattison adds that Ripley attractions are not only close at hand, but many are
offering savings and value-added activities for families who venture out during
this fuel-phobic summer.

Batman
the Ride reopens at Six Flags Over Georgia (July
2, 2008) Georgia state officials approved
the reopening of Batman The Ride when Six
Flags Over Georgia opens to the public
today. The B&M inverted coaster has
been closed since Saturday when a South
Carolina teenager, Asia Leeshawn Ferguson,
17, intentionally disobeyed posted warnings,
climbed two six-foot fences and was decapitated
by a speeding train.
State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said the amusement park met all safety
standards.
But according to reports,
within the next ten days the park must increase
the number and size of warning signs at the
park. The message on these signs should includes
the words "extreme
danger."
"The signs that are out there now meet the standards," Thurmond said. "But
it is our opinionthese
additional steps should be taken to enhance
the safety of the surrounding area."
The park must also enhance
its fencing within 120 days. The state did
no specify if that meant higher fences or
a different type of barrier. "That will be
left up to the park," Thurmond said. "But
Six Flags must provide a more effective barrier
from unauthorized individuals."
While the work is being performed, security
personnel must patrol in the area around the
coaster when it is operating.

Arizona's
Governor, State Legislature approve new
Rock n' Roll themer(July
1, 2008) Decades Music Theme Park, a plan
years in the making, got the final nod
needed from the State of Arizona to turn
the massive theme park into reality. Governor
Janet Napolitano's approval late this past
Friday, following the State Senate's days
earlier, allows for the creation of a "regional
attraction district" between Phoenix
and Tucson in Eloy, Arizona. The legislation
authorizes up to $750 million in new bonds
to pay for project costs.
The State of Arizona's legislation follows that of South Carolina's which helped
make possible the $450 million Hard Rock Park that opened earlier this year in
Myrtle Beach.
"Thanks to Republican and Democrat leadership in Arizona we have a tremendous
framework and financing mechanism to bring a dynamic new attraction to one of
the country's great tourism markets. Arizona is the largest market in the country
without a theme park and we aim to change that," Decades
Founders Marty West and Greg Sherman said.
West and Sherman are in negotiations with the following companies and individuals,
among others, to play roles in the project:
* Fender Musical Instruments Corporation: The iconic brand of guitars, amplifiers,
and all things rock-n-roll since 1946. Worldwide headquarters are located in
Scottsdale.
* Danny Zelisko: currently serves as the head of Live Nation Arizona and has
been the top concert promoter in Arizona for the past three decades.
* Chicago-based Golub & Company:
active in Arizona real estate for several
years where they were most recently involved
with the development of the Scottsdale Waterfront
project. They have significant holdings in
the Chicago market including some of the
community's signature properties.
* Phil Ehart: drummer, a founding member and manager for the rock band Kansas.
* Peter Alexander: a theme park veteran from his work with Universal Studios
Florida, Disney Tokyo and Epcot, has already agreed to be Decades' CEO.
West and Sherman said the project team will now work on forming the theme park
district, raising additional capital and begin more significant work on the project's
design.
They are hopeful of
opening the park in 2012. For more, visit:

Weeki
Wachee mermaids to perform at Ripley’s
Aquarium in Myrtle Beach (June 30,
2008) The world-famous mermaids of Weeki
Wachee Springs attraction in Florida, will
be performing at Ripley’s Aquarium
in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Aug. 1-3, 2008.
Ripley’s Aquarium is part of the
Ripley Entertainment family of worldwide
entertainment facilities.
The mermaids have scheduled
three performances each of the three days,
marking the first time in the 61 year history
that the mermaids have performed outside
of the famous spring of Weeki Wachee’s
underwater theater.
Three veteran
mermaids from Weeki Wachee Springs
attraction have been chosen to embark
on this unique performance. Mermaids
Marcy Terry, Stayce McConnell and Carli
Dofka were chosen because they bring
more than 25 years of mermaid experience
to the event.
Ripley’s “Ray Bay”, a
15-foot-deep, 85,000-gallon saltwater tank,
will be the setting for this unique and
historical performance. Following each
performance, a meet n’ greet and
photo opportunities will be available with
the mermaids.
Other special
programs will include High Tea with
the mermaids and a special Stingray
Splash with the mermaids where guests
will have the opportunity to safely
swim, splash and frolic with stingrays
and mermaids.
“We are very excited about the opportunity to take our show on the road,” said
Mermaid Manager Marcy Terry. “We feel
privileged to represent Weeki Wachee Springs
and will provide them a feel for the magic
that has been our show for 60 years.”
Terry recently returned
from a scouting trip to Ripley’s to see what challenges
the mermaids would face and Ripley’s invited her to swim with tail to test
the water. “There were a few concerns initially,” said Terry. “Our
breathing ability, performing in salt water, and the stingrays and sharks that
will be swimming with us in the tank topped the list. It turned out there wasn’t
anything to concern ourselves with, everything is great and it’s a beautiful
facility. We have created a special show that will look beautiful in those surroundings
and will represent Weeki Wachee at its best.”

Great
American Family Parks announces new trading
Symbol, completes name change to Parks!
America, Inc. (June 27,
2008) Great American Family Parks, Inc.,
a company in the business of acquiring,
staffing and managing theme parks announced
that the company has received its new trading
symbol from Nasdaq Corporate Actions, and
will trade under the symbol PRKA. In addition,
as previously announced, Great American
Family Parks has formalized the process
of changing its name to Parks! America,
Inc. The company previously traded under
the symbol GFAM.
CEO Larry Eastland said, "We
are delighted to complete our name change
and to begin using our new ticker symbol.
This is part of a broader initiative that
involves reinvigorating our regional parks
as we focus our efforts on building a strong
brand for consumers and for our shareholders."
Anheuser-Busch
rejects InBev proposal (June 27,
2008) Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc. has announced
that its board of directors has unanimously
determined that the unsolicited, non-binding
proposal by InBev to acquire all outstanding
shares of Anheuser-Busch for $65 per share
is financially inadequate and not in the
best interests of Anheuser-Busch shareholders.
"InBev's proposal significantly undervalues the unique assets and prospects
of Anheuser-Busch," said Patrick Stokes, chairman of the board for the company. "The
proposed price does not reflect the strength
of Anheuser-Busch's global, iconic brands Bud
Light and Budweiser, the top two selling beer
brands in the world, with Budweiser selling
in more than 80 countries today. The proposal
also undervalues the earnings growth actions
that the company had already planned, which
have significant potential for shareholder
value creation; the company's market position
in the United States, the most-profitable beer
market in the world; and the high value of
its existing strategic investments."
The board thoroughly studied the proposal with independent financial and legal
advisers on multiple occasions during the two-week period since the proposal
was made, and the board's independent directors also met alone to fully examine
its merits.
"The InBev proposal fails to be competitive with alternative plans the company
has developed in recent months to generate significant top-line and bottom-line
growth, which will increase value for the company's shareholders," said
Douglas A. Warner III, the board's lead independent director. "The board
will continue to consider all opportunities that build shareholder value."

New
Skycoaster takes flight at Canada's La
Ronde (June 27, 2008) Plenty
of eager flyers queued up June 21, 2008
for the official opening of La Ronde’s
newest thrill ride, a 173-foot-tall Skycoaster
dubbed Catapult. La Ronde’s newest
upcharge attraction stands next to the
famous Grande Roue Ferris Wheel near the
rear of the park. Its unique location allows
the ride to swing high above Lac aux Dauphins
(Lake of the Dolphins) and provide a one-of-a-kind
experience for thrillseekers.
Skycoaster’s Managing Director Mike Gutknecht was enthused about the ride’s
unique placement. “This is our 18th Skycoaster to open at a Six Flags
property,” he said. “Each location
has its own assets, but I think swinging out
over the water with the beautiful setting of
downtown Montreal in the background is truly
a great experience for flyers.”
Skycoaster worked closely
with Entertainment Management Group’s Bill Wright
throughout the installation process. EMG has overseen the installation of four
roller coasters at Six Flags parks within the past two years and worked previously
with Skycoaster. “Both Six Flags and Skycoaster are great partners to
have in the field,” said Wright. “We have a great relationship with
them and it was a thrill to put a vertical ride at La Ronde. We brought in 120-ton
and 80-ton cranes to set the ride up. Once the grade was leveled and the footings
along the water’s edge were finished the erection process went smoothly.”

From the moment
it crests the lift hill, taking the first
80-ft. plunge at a banked 90° left
turn until the train pulls into the station,
Evel Knievel delivers unparalleled thrills.
Sitting in 24-passenger Millennium Flyers,
self-proclaimed daredevils will fly along
2,700-feet of track featuring high banked
turns, fan curves, camelbacks, a double
down drop, 16 hills and an impressive
14 crossovers. The trains sport the red,
white and blue colors that Evel himself
proudly wore on jump after jump during
his remarkable career.
"We are honored
to be the home of Evel Knievel, the first
and only roller coaster named after this
larger-than-life figure," said Dave Roemer, Six
Flags St. Louis park president. "Everything
about this ride is first-class, and Evel Knievel
will quickly become the most talked about wooden
coaster in the industry."
For some, the ride will be nostalgic, for others a first-time introduction to
the life and times of America's legendary daredevil. Monitors throughout the
queue line will play clips of some of Evel's greatest jumps and a series of billboards
will walk guests through the timeline of his legendary career. Evel was instrumental
in creating the ride's theming and was honored to have the coaster named after
him.
"I've been thrilling people all my life with my death defying stunts. And
I've proven after a spectacular fall that you're never a failure as long as you
try to get up. What better way to create a new generation of Evel Knievel fans
than by partnering with Six Flags for this exciting attraction. I'm thrilled
to be part of it."— Evel Knievel,
September 2007
Evel Knievel began wowing people with his jumps in 1965 and earned the name of
America's Legendary Daredevil for his heroic and death-defying feats. When he
retired in 1976, Evel held the Guinness Book of World Records for the most broken
bones and had also captured ABC's Wide World of Sports largest TV viewing audience
with his Ohio jump in 1974.
Evel received international
media attention for both his successful jumps
and his amazing crashes. Some of his career
highlights and best known feats include setting
a world record for jumping 19 cars in Ontario,
CA in 1971; flying over 50 cars stacked in
the center of the Los Angeles Coliseum in
1973; jumping 14 Greyhound buses in Ohio
in October of 1974 and soaring over Snake
River Canyon in Idaho in his rocket powered "skycyle" that
same year. They rival some of his more spectacular
spills, including his jump over the fountains
at Caesar's Palace in 1968 and his leap over
13 double tiered buses in Wembley Stadium in
1975.
Evel Knievel passed away November 2007 but his legacy lives on through many tributes
including the annual Evel Knievel Days in his hometown of Butte, Montana, a wax
statue at Madame Tussauds in Las Vegas, a motorcycle and memorabilia display
in the Smithsonian Institute and now the legend rides on at Six Flags St. Louis
with the Evel Knievel coaster.
Evel Knievel brings the total number of roller
coasters at Six Flags St. Louis to eight, the
most roller coasters at any park in Missouri.
Six Flags St. Louis also becomes one of only
11 theme parks in the United States to boast
three or more wooden roller coasters.

minimal damage following fire (June
16, 2008) New Jersey's Morey’s Piers
and its beachfront waterparks opened today
as usual following a fire earlier this
morning on Morey’s Mariners Landing
Pier. The fire that started sometime after
1 a.m. in the vicinity of the Super Scooters,
Mini Scooters, and the Seal Flume rides
was quickly brought under control and the
damage was limited to these rides. At least
11 area fire departments responded to the
alarm, and an investigation is underway
to determine the cause.
Will Morey, president
of the Morey organization, said, “Thankfully, when
the smoke cleared, nobody was hurt, and the damage was not nearly as bad as it
first appeared. In fact, 97 percent of our Mariners Landing Pier was unaffected.
Our fire departments did an excellent job of containing the fire, and we were
given the approval to open as usual today, with only three rides closed. With
nearly 100 rides and attractions, our guest’s experience will remain spectacular.”

Cypress
Gardens Skiers launch new shows (June
11, 2008) Cypress Gardens debuted its seasonal
nighttime ski show on June 7. Visitors
can catch the unique show on Saturday evenings
this summer, running through Labor Day.
The new show is highlighted by the flips,
tricks and graceful ballet lines of the
Cypress Gardens Skiers. The new elements
of the show include: upbeat themed music;
displays of pyrotechnics; and powerful
spotlights that create a feeling of summer
nights in America.
Guests can also take in the action of the new daytime ski show starting soon,
which is being revamped with new moves, music and costumes. Shows take place
three times daily (with the exception of four shows on Saturday).
The first water ski
show at Cypress Gardens was performed in
1943 and was a bit of an accident. Julie
Pope, the park founders wife, had sent a
photo to the Orlando Sentinel, which they
ran, and featured beautiful flowers and skiers
in the background. The next day three servicemen
showed up and asked what time the water ski
show was. Mrs. Pope stated that the ski show
was at 3:30 that afternoon, and asked the gentlemen
to enjoy the gardens until that time. Ironically,
though, there was no ski show so Mrs. Pope
quickly telephoned the local school to have
her son, Dick Pope, Jr., round up some friends
to perform for the soldiers. She picked the
children up at scholl and the show began exactly

Morey’s
Piers “First Flight” launched (June
2, 2008) On Saturday May 17 at 12:00 noon,
Morey’s Piers launched the “First
Flight” to “FLY The Great Nor’Easter”!
The event benefited Make a Wish Foundation
of New Jersey and raised over $4,000. Morey’s
Piers invited the public to participate
in the “First Flight” by donating
to Make A Wish, giving them a chance to
be one of the first to Fly - The Great
Nor’Easter. Four lucky people who
donated to Make A Wish Foundation of New
Jersey along with corporate sponsors experienced
the new “Freedom Flight” seats
and at the same time helped grant wishes
to Cape May County children afflicted with
life threatening medical conditions.
This year Morey’s
Piers increased the thrill factor on the
Vekoma-designed Great Nor’Easter suspended
looping coaster, which opened in 1995. The
ride's new train features an ergonomically
designed seat making the experience more
enjoyable by holding the rider firmly, while
also providing unhindered vision in all directions
as well as complete arm freedom. The design
utilizes a lap bar and innovative vest, to
comfortably restrain riders. With a redesigned
station and all new red, white and blue color
theme, the ride re-opened to rave reviews
from guests.
SeaWorld
Orlando announces new B&M flying coaster
for 2009 (MAY
29, 2008) SeaWorld Orlando has announced
the next generation of SeaWorld thrills
with Manta -- a new mega-attraction which
will transition guests from the awe of
encountering rays in underwater flight...
into the sensation of actually being one.
Swooping over sea and sky, Manta will inspire
riders with amazing underwater animal habitats,
then soar them face-down, in a horizontal
position, aboard a manta-inspired flying
coaster. Manta opens summer 2009.
The Manta, a Bolliger & Mabillard
Flying Coaster, will create a new level of
immersion into the animal world by enveloping
riders in a sensation of oneness with the
ocean’s most powerful and graceful
creature as they soar, dive and plummet through
the air, and at times within inches of the
sea.
Whether guests choose
to ride or not, the attraction is a world
unto itself. Floor-to-ceiling windows create
mesmerizing face-to-fin encounters with 300
rays, as well as thousands of fish and mysterious
creatures native to oceans all over the world.
Shark rays, spotted eagles rays, leopard
rays, cownose rays, and oscillate river rays
float past guests with fluidity and grace
in a view new to SeaWorld. Enhancing the
feeling of awe, elaborate lighting, sound
and rushing waterfalls further submerge guests
into this underwater universe.
Inspired by the underwater
flight of these powerful creatures, guests
will fly face-down, in a horizontal position,
underneath the belly of a coaster train shaped
as a giant manta. With a wing span of 12
feet, the giant manta will soar over sea
and sky in the most graceful flying coaster
ever created.
Gliding, swooping and
diving up to nearly 60 mph, through four
inversions on 3,359 feet of track, riders
will feel as if they are a ray, taking flight
effortlessly from sky to sea -- so close
at times that the Manta’s wings skim
the waves.
“This ride is uniquely SeaWorld,” said Dan Brown, VP and GM of SeaWorld
Orlando. “SeaWorld is famous for connecting
guests with the sea and its amazing creatures,
and Manta does this in a way that has never
been done before, creating a true sense of
oneness between human and animal.
“The sensation of Manta also will be like none other in the world – guests
will be inspired by the grace and power of live rays, then feel as if they, themselves,
are gliding through air and water,” added Joseph Couceiro, chief marketing
officer for SeaWorld’s parent company, Busch Entertainment Corporation. “No
one but SeaWorld can unite thrills and ocean
animals into such a unique experience.”
The four-acre, 140-foot-tall
attraction will be located inside the main
entrance to SeaWorld, and become an icon
in the park with its unique design. Towering
over SeaWorld’s 200-acres, the manta-themed coaster – cloaked in
hues of dark purple, ultramarine blue, and cobalt – will
lure guests into the world of the mysterious
ray.

2008) MEI, the manufacturer with the vending
industry’s largest installed base
of bill validators, has extended its offer
to help operators update their machines.
Now through July 15, operators can trade
in their existing bill validators for a
credit toward the purchase of the latest
MEI Series 2000 Flash-programmable validators,
which are already equipped to accept the
new bill. The Flash-program feature enables
fast, one-step software changes.
Operators get a $40 credit for replacing non-Flash MEI Series 2000 validators
and a $20 credit for replacing other MEI and non-MEI validators. Operators can
trade in bill validators through their local MEI distributor. For a full list

“Many of our customers who have older bill validator models have not yet
updated their machines to accept the new $5,” said Chris Mumford, senior
director of sales for the MEI Vending channel. “Our
trade-in program is designed to help operators
update their fleet of bill validators at a
reduced cost. We want to make replacing the
entire unit an affordable alternative.”

“MEI understands the pressures we are facing to upgrade units in these
tough financial times,” said Wayne Brewer, service manager for Colonial
Vendors in Virginia, “The MEI trade-in
program has been a great way for our company
to retire older validators at less cost to
our business. That will help us with short
term cash flow and with long-term profitability.”
The trade-in program
is a limited-time offer, so operators must
contact an authorized MEI distributor immediately.
Oregon's
Thrill-Ville USA closes due to insurance
costs, ailing economy (MAY 21,
2008) Officials at Thrill-Ville USA, located
just south of Salem, Ore. have announced
they will not open for the 2008 season,
and that this will most likely be permanent
decision.
Vince Arata, who is
employed by the owners of Thrill-Ville and
manages the adjacent KOA park, blames escalating
liability insurance costs and the lax economy
as reasons for the decision. “With the economy and the way everything is,
and the liability, it’s just not worth it anymore,” said
Arata.
Thrill-Ville is owned by the Vettrus brothers, who own both Thrill-Ville and
the KOA, opened the amusement park in the 1970s with just go-karts. They added
to the stable over the years until they offered twenty rides including a Skycoaster
and a classic Anton Schwarzkopf Jet Star (Ripper), which came from the Santa
Cruz Beach Boardwalk.
“It’s just a heartbreak for us,” Arata added. “The Vettruses,
they built it and put everything they had into it. That’s
been their baby for years.”

resources, operating experience and capital
investment plan are expected to contribute
